Meet the 'Downtownies': Frank Sr., Natacha and Frank Jr.

Second-grader Frank Parra Jr. doesn’t remember the brand new house with the big yard and the tall fence and the nearby megamall. Inspired in part by a tax incentive, his father, Frank Sr., and mother, Natacha, left their Westside home and moved into a downtown townhouse when he was 2.

The 8-year-old has grown up with a skyline view from his bedroom window. He learned to swim in the pool inside his family’s gated complex on North Liberty Street. He roller-skates on the ring of asphalt that loops around the knoll of grass near his family’s driveway, where a roll-out basketball hoop tucks under their second-story deck.

Just steps away, fire engines and police cars blaze a path up and down the street, their sirens screaming reminders of the humanity beyond the family’s urban oasis. Even Frank Jr.’s friends tend to doubt his home-life account.

You live where? they ask the Riverside Presbyterian Day School student.

“I say, 'I live in downtown’ and they say no,” Frank Jr. says. “And then I say, 'I can walk to the stadium,’ and they say, 'Yeah, right.’ I say, 'I can walk to the baseball game,’ and they say, 'Yeah, right.’ I say, 'I have a pool at my house,’ and they say 'Yeah, right.’ ”
