How do I build a backyard shelter for the patio?
I don't want an octagonal or hexagonal gazebo. I just need to make a square shelter. No walls needed. Or, I could use a square gazebo. Something simple and to keep the sun and rain off.
If you know of any websites or books/videos than would be helpful on this specific topic, please let me know.
It seems to me that it would be very simple to do. Kind of like a canopy bed, but without the bed, and, with an angled canopy/roof so that the rain will run off. But, if there's a tried-and-true way to do it, I would appreciate the info. :)
The section of the patio that I want to cover is 10' x 10'. I will make it out of cedar.
Thanks
We built ours using a Sunset book that is sold at the Lowes, Perogals, Patio Covers and Gazebos. It gives very detailed instructions and material lists for a wide variety of different patio covers. We actually combined the plans of two different designs to meet our needs and it was very simple to build, but it took this husband and wife team a few more days to complete the project than the book indicated.
Does anyone know of a great place to host a family get together near LaCrosse,WI, with outdoor patio?
I need shelter in case weather is bad but want to be able to walk out to a patio or the like. This can in neighboring citys also.
I plan to have it next summer 2008. It may be in cities or towns nearby. It could also be all outdoor with a shelter.
The 16th Annual D.A.R.E./G.R.E.A.T Chili Cook-Off is only a couple months away. On Saturday, October 13th . Or try Best Western Hotels they have tons of banquet rooms and catering.
How do I housetrain a 7 month male dog I got at a rescue shelter?
He was neutered two days ago and is lifting his leg on everything. I am keeping him in a crate in the house and taking him out often. How will I know when it is safe to bring him in the house? I also want to keep him from lifting his leg on our back door and patio furniture. Any advise?
My rescue dog did the same. It's going to take a while as they are used to marking their territory. Spray the 'marked' area with vinegar as this is supposed to deter them from re-marking in the same place. Sometimes this works, other times it does not. I finally trained my dog by rewarding him with treats everytime he marked or went to the bathroom OUTSIDE. He has never been crated. He no longer marks inside the house, but I do still have problems with him marking inside other people's homes. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to change that behavior so I have to leave him in their yard when visiting with someone or at home. A vet told me that dogs do this when neutered at an older age (my dog) but yours was done at 7 months so it will probably cease eventually. You have to give it at least 3 weeks for the dog to understand he can only mark outside.
How do I keep Mr. Luke from digging in the back yard (and planters on the patio)?
He is a yellow lab - pointer mix, less than two years old. We got him four months ago from a lab rescue shelter. He is sweet as he can be, affection, and great to other people and dogs. But he digs in the yard and he doesn't seem to stop when corrected. I usually show him the spot and so "no" several times and give him a spank or two. Then he does it again, later. He is a super smart dog, but plays dumb when given orders. Your thoughts, dog experts?
labs are infamous for digging -- its part of the breed (mixed or not).
swatting him and saying 'no' is ineffective... especially if it is after the fact (and not during the act).
my dog loved when i bought one of those kiddie pools and filled it full of sand. he could dig all day in his area without bothering my yard. you could also fill the pool with potting soil or land dirt if you wanted
Growing plants on a north-facing patio.?
Can anyone suggest plants, preferably easy maintenance, that would grow in pots on a north facing patio. The area gets no natural sunlight, but is fairly well sheltered from winds. Thanks
A lot of shrubbery, or vine plants will grow, in minimum light. Most require minimum care.
I also copied an article from wikipedia for you. "Shade gardens are gardens planted and grown in areas with little or no direct sunlight during the day, either under trees or on the shady sides of buildings. Shade gardening presents certain challenges, in part because only certain plants are able to grow in shady conditions. Very few edible plants grow well in shady conditions, so shade gardens are usually ornamental gardens.
Designing a shade garden doesn't have to be boring. Plant colors may not be as bold as in a sunny location, but you can create interest by selecting plants with varying form, texture, height and color. A good key to remember is to plant "cool" colors in the shade- purples and blues will be much bolder and striking than "warm" colors such as reds and oranges, which are more dramatically placed in sunny locations."
Good luck.
Helping Works: Remember Boise's homeless Monday
Janelle Wise: Needs go beyond temporary housingAs you celebrate Thanksgiving, consider for a moment those without a roof over their heads. You probably take having a home for granted, whether you rent or own, whether it's cozy or palatial. Last week nearly 50 women like you had their eyes opened about some 2,000 men, women and children who don't have a street address. What we learned might surprise you.
The occasion was an Idaho Women's Charitable Foundation education session for members and guests. In preparation for reviewing grant applications in 2010, we invited people who serve Boise's homeless to describe the extent of the need and what is most necessary to meet it.
Contrary to recent news stories, they said the biggest problem for every shelter is not too few beds available but the difficulty of finding good, accessible mental health services, low-cost housing for people ready to go out on their own and transitional group housing for those ready to leave the shelter but not quite up to independent living.
