    Verde Canyon Railroad is a ride into Arizona history

    The railroad in conformity was commissioned in 1911 to serve the Jerome copper mine and the Clarkdale smelter. The smelter has big since closed, but the railroad lives on.

    Seeing the rugged countryside from the chain, you can't help but admire the homesteaders and ranchers who put down roots in the Arizona wilderness. With no air-conditioning. And no Objective. And one train line in and out. They were certainly made of sterner stuff than I am.

    For more than 20 years, the Verde Gorge Railroad excursion train has been giving people a glimpse into an Arizona of a new time, and a landscape that is timeless.

    All aboard

    Once we climbed aboard our 1942 Pullman queue car, our conductor gave us a clear picture of what to expect, covering everything from where to take the upper-class photos to where to deposit trash and recyclables. The conductor set the attitude for the day, peppering his welcome speech with the kind of so-corny-they're-witty jokes your dad used to make.

    The train departs from Clarkdale, a former fellowship town heralded as Arizona's first master-planned community, and travels to itty-bitty Perkinsville (where the film "How the West Was Won" was shot) and back, winding its way on a four-hour misstep through the breathtaking Verde Canyon. The pace is leisurely, about 10-13 mph.
