is it ok to put a tarp over your garden and cut holes out for the plant to come threw?

Home and garden centers sell Weed-Block, which you put down over the ground to keep the weeds down. You can cut holes in the Weed-Block where you want to put your plants. Then you cover over the Weed-Block with bark or other covering.

is putting weed control tarp recommended before adding mulch to a garden?

or can you just add mulch to top soil or dirt?

It does a good job BUT. You and everybody else always changes and add plants - its inevitable! Then the bad part of putting down the fabric shows it self. Its a bear to cut and maneuver around your planting plans and will really frustrate you in years to come.
I do it the old fashion way. Without.

Want to build a small indoor garden, using a plastic tarp layer to protect the floor?

Hi,

I really want to build an indoor garden, in a bed of rocks. I need to protect the wooden floor and was thinking of putting a plastic tarp down then fill it up with soil and grow my garden in it. Would this be a problem for drainage after watering plants? I have a heated wooden floor and I do not want to damage it. I cannot think of any other plant to keep my floor protected... Also would a heated floor during winter do any harm? Any advice?

Thanks in advance!

Why not do a Container-garden & use your Rocks to decorate it all? This way, you can water each container without worrying about the water, provided you have some sort of a dish on bottom, to catch the water. You could take 2 large clay pots, bolt them together, put the dish underneath, & plant your seeds in the top one. This also makes a good little table, if you put a piece of plywood on top, if you don't want to use it for flowers or vegs.

I am looking for a tarp that has a fitting for a garden hose and is used to reirect water from a leaky roof.?

check out gemplers.com they have one and its a good thing

I want to put mulch on my garden to prevent weeds?

My father planted bulbs that come up every Spring. And every year my garden gets run amuck with weeds. I want to put down some tarp and then some that red chipped mulch to keep the weeds from growing. Do I have to pull up the bulbs to do that? and how can I if the flowers bloomed already?

My personal favorite for weed barrier is newspaper! Not the shiny ad stuff but the plain old regular newspaper! Lay a thick layer (7-8 sheets) over the area, water well with the hose, apply your mulch and water that in well also. The watering makes the newspaper stay down till you can get the mulch on it and watering the mulch makes the 2 bond together.

The spring bulbs will poke their way up through. We look for "lumps" coming up in the spring and go give them a helping hand by peeling back the newspaper. The newspaper will last a couple of years and add organic material to your soil without shutting off the air and water like the tarps and fabrics do. And you are recycling!!!!

I would rethink the red mulch though......it's colored with dye. Just get the normal stuff, better for the environment and you both!

The 2010 Winter Survival Guide

Ah, the garden is redolent with the odor of a really cold Gulf Coast winter, a disconcerting mix of green and sour, like cut grass that’s been piled up to rot. The garden-eating pumpkin vine has been reduced to watery bones, as if it had been boiled all night long. The leaves of the bamboo palm that leaned too far from the eaves are spotted gray. The banana looks bomb-blasted. This will be one of those winters, I expect, that reminds gardeners of our unusual niche in the world’s climate zones. The persistent warmth of the Gulf inspires tropical delusions for months, and sometimes years, on end, until a January day like this one reminds us we’re on the edge of a polar continent. By the time you read this, we may have already set record lows.

Don’t get too dramatic about it: It won’t have been the coldest weather the Gulf Coast has experienced by a long shot. But the worst may not be over, because this is also shaping up to be one of the longest runs of continuously cold weather we’ve seen in a couple of decades. In a more typical Mobile winter, a cold front buzz-saws its way through in the middle of the night, sending temperatures down into the lower or mid-20s for two or three hours, just long enough to toast the leaves of the most tender tropical plants.
