Each inmate was fully dunked, arms crossed, into a expedient baptismal pond constructed from a blue tarp, plastic pipes and a garden hose.
One-by-one, they emerged again, the name of the imprison stamped on the backs of their soaked uniforms.
"I felt like a preponderance was gone," said Leonard Tartt, who has been in and out of jail and correctional institution for years. "It wasn't no magical experience — but I felt agile."
Several years ago, an old kitchen that the jail had outgrown was converted to a chapel, the design funded through private donations. Now, nearly 3 dozen Christian and Islamic services are held there weekly with the resist of 150 volunteers, organizers said.
Leaders of Eclectic, Jehovah's Witness, Methodist, Baptist, Holiness and other dedication groups rotate through the same room.
In the midst of jail overcrowding, the subdued chapel has become a respite for inmates, many of whom are living with four or five roommates reversed cells designed for two. Some show up looking for a temporary escape from the incommodious quarters.
