how can i find out if i hav air raid shelters in garden be4 i build on back of house as i been told there are?
my neighbour has lived in the house for 57yrs & told me the old air raid shelters for the area are in my garden & got covered up i now want to build on the back of my home how do i find out if there are still there as dont how to find out tryed the council offices & the kid was unhelpful please help i have been waiting for help for 3mths
the air raid shelters were never built close to the house because if the house was bombed then it might block the escape exit they built them normally at the end of the garden ..if you did come across some of the shelter while building ..it may cost a bit more to remove ..but to a good builder its not a problem
Can we plant a garden over the top of a storm shelter?
We have an in-ground tornado shelter in our back yard. currently there is a flower garden over the top of it. I was thinking about expanding the flower garden and turning it into a vegetable garden. Should this be a problem?
All systems should be go for that idea as long as the soil is good and you give the plants the fertilizer and keep the bed properly watered and weeded. The fact flowers have grown there before makes me feel you should have good results by planting at the proper time. Remember some plants like peas like being planted early and some can actually have a couple of plantings. If this is your first vegetable garden be sure to plant radishes they grow very well and let you see Progress
Homeless Shelter opening an urban garden, needs start up ideas?
What would be some good edible plants to use in 5 foot by 5 foot containers. We live in the 7th and 8th zones in central Arkansas.
I think it would be best to plant something which will continue to produce and produce quickly. My suggestion would be to grow tomatoes, cucumbers, green beans, okra, and even spinach.
These are all crops which will continue to produce even after you harvest your first crop from them.
Good luck and I admire what you are doing!
i been told by neighbour our gardens still have air raid shelters in the garden ,he has lived there for 57 yrs
It is totally possible that air raid shelters from WWII still exsist. I don't know how safe they would be though. On the otherhand, he could be pulling your leg. Try to get more information from him in terms of where they are. Certainly if it's true, it would be interesting to see pictures of them.
What jobs can the volunteers in shelters do?
Are there any shelters that are completely ran by volunteers or do they all have at least one or two paid staff members?
Jobs I can think of:
Admin work
Practical animal care (kennel cleaning, feeding, grooming, etc).
Fundraising
Educating the community (e.g. local schools) on animal welfare
Home-checks
The upkeep of the shelter (e.g. painting, decorating, gardening, etc)
Vet runs (if there isn't one on-site)
Advertising
Fostering
Dog-walking
Any other jobs?
lawyer/accounting work. If you are running as a non-profit, getting set up as a business. Which is what you should do, as you may have an accident, and would have to provide insurance, etc. Like if a dog bit a volunteer who then had major medical bills. And then you would also have to have someone perform yearly audits and submit everything you need to maintain non-profit status.
But that stuff isn't a permanent job once you get going. You will need it as you pull this together.
Some places are completely volunteer, but they are more rescue set-ups. Like where they rescue and then place in homes with trained people who rehab, and then place in a permanent home if possible.

Freezing temperatures put strain on area shelters
The last few days, our area has been in the deep freeze, and our weather team says we are in for the longest stretch of extremely cold weather since December 2000.
Many homeless people were able to go inside the area shelters to get out of the elements.
But there are still those that will be sleeping in the cold.
Whether these men, women and children are inside or outside, shelters say they need your help.
"We're not talking about someone's comfort. You're talking about it getting cold enough to take someone's life," said Rebecca Wallace with the Salvation Army.
With temperatures dropping in the teens, area shelters are seeing more people coming through their doors.
"It's incredibly crowded whenever the weather gets this cold we have full capacity. Every bed is full; we put mats on the floor," said Wallace.
Wallace says they've gotten so many people coming in that they've been forced to create an overspill area.
"We're putting people in rooms that normally we don't have residents staying in over night," Wallace.
