We have an in-ground tornado shelter in our back yard. currently there is a flower garden over the top of it. I was thinking about expanding the flower garden and turning it into a vegetable garden. Should this be a problem?
All systems should be go for that idea as long as the soil is good and you give the plants the fertilizer and keep the bed properly watered and weeded. The fact flowers have grown there before makes me feel you should have good results by planting...

Community garden in River Falls helps food pantries
RIVER FALLS - Four-year-old Sebastien Bowden plucked an ear of corn off its trail, peeled back the husk and eagerly sunk his teeth into the underlying ripened kernels.
The preschooler also eats babe tomatoes like they're jelly beans, according to his mam, Elizabeth Bowden.
"There's nothing like sun-ripened tomatoes novel off the vine," she said. "I can't argue with him."
Not only has Sebastien developed a confirmed taste for vegetables, but he can identify everything growing in the Grow to Serving garden in River Falls, said Bowden, who's one of dozens of volunteers in the garden.
Sebastien's at the crack knowledge of where food comes from is a valuable side benefit of the nonprofit Yield fruit to Share project, which began in 2009.
"When you can show kids where their food comes from - when they can pick it off the vine - they're more pleased to try it," Bowden said. "For me, that's a huge part of this mission."
Grow to Part's purpose is three-fold: To donate fresh, healthful prog to area residents, many of whom may not otherwise be able to afford it; to showcase sustainable agriculture practices; and to nurture communitywide relationships.
