What small tree that has a large canopy would be suitable for a small garden for shade?
Many flowering fruit trees stay relatively short, but have nice canopies and lovely spring flowers.
A large shrub grafted to a smaller trunk will also offer the effect you are looking for.
I like flowering almonds, weigela, and spireas for this method. All are hardy and offer beautiful flowers.

I n the kitchen, you may add 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon to a bowl of oatmeal, and enjoy the enhanced flavor. If you added 1/2 cup of cinnamon to a bowl of oatmeal, you wouldn't want to eat it.
Similarly, a little fertilizer may be good for your garden, but a lot is not good. If you're using a synthetic, or non-organic fertilizer, you may "burn" your plants, even kill them with too much fertilizer. I've never harmed plants with too much organic fertilizer, but why satiate plants?
If the fertilizer doesn't kill them, overfed plants will attract more destructive insects. Eliot Coleman, garden writer and organic grower of vegetables for market year-round in Maine, controls aphids by weekly irrigating, leaching out excess nitrogen.
Since our precipitation is so sparse (usually less than 12 inches annually), rains don't leach much nitrogen out of our soil. We use irrigation or city water to supplement natural precipitation, but even then, it probably doesn't wash out most of our nutritive supplements. If you use organic matter such as compost for plant food, it's even less likely to be washed away.
