What do you think of window awnings?

The lower-front of my home is pretty bland, 28' x 12'H grey stucco, with two windows and a door. I'm thinking of putting awnings over the windows (1930's home, would fit in neighborhood). Does anyone have opinions about canvas versus aluminum (vertical)?
Someone mentioned shutters...I already have those, but the home still looks boring. It was originally built as a boarding house with a store front on the bottom level, with a 12' ceiling. 12' of stucco, on a house that sits 3' above road grade, equals a lot of "blah" space before the siding starts 15' up.

As an interior designer concerned with curb appeal and house value, awnings can add to or detract from both of these in a heartbeat. Most of the aluminum vertical types are rather industrial and unattractive. However, there are many manufacturer's who make very attractive canvas awnings which will add to both your curb appeal and your home's value. One design in particular, manufactured with Sunbrella fabric would be an asset to your 1930's home, won't fade, mold or mildew, can be washed off with a garden hose and comes in a variety of colors and patterns. The sides are wrought iron capped by finials and the awning drapes between them. Absolutely charming!

With grey stucco, burgandy will pop and coordinate well. They even have half round awnings with valances that could work. I'd call all of the ones in your area for their free in home estimates, look at the fabrics they offer, their designs and construction with your application.

Is it possible to paint awnings?

I have several canvas awnings above the windows on my home. They are in good shape, but faded. Can I paint them? I also have matching roll-up blinds around my patio. I think they are a woven vinyl mesh. Can I paint them?

You can paint the awnings with any good quality latex exterior paint. Won't be permanent, but cheap. Just clean them really well, and make sure they are dry when you start.

As far as the blinds, the only type of paint I have ever heard of that would adfhere to vinyl mesh is Krylon. It's made for plastic, anddtries flexible, but I have no ides if it's flexible enough to hold up under the ups and downs of blinds

Happy campers' slice of heaven

Relax. Time to get away – away from the city, the job, the stress. Leave it all behind; well, most of it anyway. Take the important things: the boat, the tent, the radio, cellphone and television. May as well take the Sky dish too.

No distractions. Just gonna rough it. Read some Marian Keyes or the one about Iraq. No complications. Just a couple of weeks of nothing. I can do what I want. Catch some crays, drink some beers, relax. And why not? It's all here.

It's off the beaten track. In fact the only track to Totaranui campground is a dusty, rocky, 10-kilometre single lane track where the names of bygone visitors are crudely dug into a sandstone wall. "Lynne" is in bold Times New Roman. "Guido hearts Theresa" seems to have been created by an epileptic graffiti artist.

The road is usually quiet, peaceful, a nice drive even. But come today it will be crawling with thousands of campers from Nelson, Richmond, some from Hamilton and Wellington, but mainly from Christchurch. They all like to get away and many do it every year. But, with the luxuries of everyday life they bring with them, can they really be called campers? And are they happy?
