Any ideas on how to camouflage the underside of an aluminum awning w/out painting it or taking it down?
I can't afford to replace it right now and we need something there for shade so taking it down is not an option right now. The underside can be seen (which is downright ugly and old) from our family room through our glass patio doors and of course if you are sitting under it. Painting it seems extremely difficult so I was wondering if there are any creative people out there who might have ideas to cover the underside with fabric or some other kind of material. My home has an asian/contemporary feel to it.
Your imagination will be you best ally in this case. Go to a fabric store, get a square yard (36 inches x 36 inches) of material. Any-any-any pattern you see that you like will do. Get a tube of Liquid Nails (any hardware store) Measure it to fit under the awning, then use the "Liquid Nails) as if it were glue, speadind a bead of it around the edges, and zig-zag it cross ways down your fabric. Very carefully, place it in the corners first, then very gently, smooth it the rest of the way out.
What kind of paint do I need to paint an aluminum awning, and what kind of primer should I use?
You can use any paint you want as long as you use a good primer. With paint you typically get what you pay for, so be willing to shell out more bucks for a higher quality paint. Go with a good outdoor latex that will be able to flex with the aluminum.
For the primer, I'd suggest water-based Kilz. Give the metal a light sanding beforehand to provide "teeth" for the primer to grip. Then apply the primer. It's better to put on two thin coats versus one thick one.
Seeking advice on which is the best tool to use to paint the underside of outdoor aluminum patio awning.?
I believe a brush would drip when painting overhead and am concerned about getting good coverage on the ridged surface. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!
You could roll on most of the paint and smooth with a brush.
Aluminum awning creaking and "ticking"?
We just got a new aluminum awning installed over our deck. The size is 20' x 10'. It's brown on the outside and white on the inside. On hot sunny days, it seems to do a lot of creaking and making "ticking" noises (Like a hot car engine). Does this sound like it's from the heat? Or is there a "settling in" period? Haven't had experience with aluminum before. We had a canvas awning previously. Before I contact the installer I wanted to ask if anyone else experienced these noises. Thank you
Yeah that sounds like the awning expanding and contracting with the change in temperature. Aluminium is a good heat conductor. It will continue to happen, but you'll probably just get used to it and not even realize it's happening.
need to replace aluminum patio awning ?
What is the cost to replace a 8x16 aluminum patio awning?
The cost I have been getting is way out of line with what the insurance will pay.
The awning is W-Pan, will be resting on a deck.
Where would a person buy one to install it themselves?

JACKSON v. STATE
So viewed, the record shows that on the morning of February 27, 2006, an employee of a local laundry discovered Jackson in an alley behind the business, attempting to cart away a large aluminum awning that belonged to the laundry. The awning, which had previously been mounted on the front of the building, had been removed and stored behind the business, in preparation for planned renovations to the building. The employee told Jackson to put the awning back where he found it, and explained to him that it was not trash. After Jackson refused to return the awning to its storage place and continued his efforts to move the same, the employee called police. By the time police arrived, Jackson had left the scene and the awning was missing. The responding officer and the employee, however, found the awning hidden behind another business, down the street from the laundry. They also discovered that the awning, which was originally 24 feet long, had been cut or torn in half. The employee and the officer returned both pieces of the awning to the storage area behind the laundry, and the employee taped a sign to the awning which stated: "This is not trash."
